SCOUTS
Be Prepared
11 – 18 Years Old
Scouts, the third branch of Scouting in South Africa, welcomes youth aged 11 to 17 into a transformative journey of leadership, exploration, and friendship. This is the core of Scouting—where young people learn to be independent, take responsibility, protect the environment, contribute to their communities, and prepare for life.
At 1st Bryanston, our Scouts step into a world where they not only discover their capabilities but also make lifelong memories and meaningful contributions to society. Whether camping in the wilderness, organizing community events, or collaborating on service projects, Scouts experience a period of self-discovery and camaraderie.
The programme covers a wide range of high-adventure activities. Scouts also develop personal and interpersonal skills such as problem-solving, independent thinking, leadership, and teamwork. These experiences help shape the youth of today into the leaders of tomorrow.
Progression through the Scout Trail includes: Traveller, Discoverer, First Class, Culminating in the prestigious Springbok Award – the highest honour a Scout can achieve.
Along the way, Scouts earn Interest Badges, Scoutcraft Badges, and Challenge Awards, each representing a milestone in their growth and achievement.
A Scout Troop is youth-led, guided by the Court of Honour (COH), a leadership team made up of Patrol Leaders and the adult Troop Scouter (TS). The COH determines the troop’s goals, competition teams, and advancement plans. Supporting them are the Assistant Troop Scouters (ATS), who design and run programmes that help Scouts achieve their ambitions.
Our TSs and ATS are trained to mentor our Scouts learn to navigate challenges, foster teamwork, and develop a deep appreciation for the world around them. This phase of Scouting emphasizes individual growth, self-reliance, and the pursuit of excellence—laying the foundation for well-rounded, confident individuals ready to make a positive impact.
